Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida has named Jonathan Kirkland the 2025 Okaloosa County Big of the Year, recognizing his dedication as a mentor and community volunteer.

  • Kirkland, who works at the Walton County Clerk of Courts, has served as a Big Brother to his Little Brother Marlon for nearly three years. The annual award celebrates mentors who demonstrate exceptional commitment to the organization’s one-to-one mentoring program.

The pair has built their relationship around shared interests in movies, food and strategy games, spending time together at activities like getting ice cream and visiting game stores.

“Jon is part of our family now. He’s giving, caring, and even a great gardener,” said Timi, Marlon’s mother.

Kirkland’s involvement extends beyond his mentoring role. He serves on the organization’s Big Recruiter Committee, helping bring new mentors into the program. His community service includes volunteering with A Bed 4 Me Foundation and Habitat for Humanity.

  • At the Walton County Clerk of Courts, where Kirkland has worked for nearly 14 years, he is known for being among the first to volunteer at community events.

Big Brothers Big Sisters staff surprised Kirkland at his office July 23 with balloons and treats to celebrate the recognition.

“We are thrilled to recognize Jonathan’s outstanding contributions as a mentor and community leader,” said Paula Shell, CEO and president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. “His dedication to Marlon and our community embodies everything this award stands for.”T

he organization’s board and staff expressed gratitude for Kirkland’s commitment to youth mentorship and his role in helping Marlon develop his potential.
