The Friends Guild of the Destin Library is pleased to share in the celebration of Black History month with representatives from the Okaloosa County Democratic Black Caucus on Tuesday, February 8th at 2:00 PM at the Destin Library (Calhoun Room) and learn first-hand about the history, leadership, goals, current efforts, and concerns of this community centered organization.
Forty years ago, Black delegates from around the State of Florida, attending the 1981 Florida State Democratic Party Convention in Hollywood, Florida were alerted to the need for increasing the power and influence of Black Democrats within the party. A decision was made at that Convention to unite Black Democrats throughout the State. The decision resulted in the organization of the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida, which was officially recognized on September 24, 1983, by the Florida Democratic Party as an official affiliate organization.
Today the vision of the OCBC is to raise overall social, economic, and political awareness and education, support the elected and appointed Democratic officials in FL, and offer advocacy and outreach to all demographics and classifications of Black people across the State of Florida.
