THE NUTCRACKER
ACT I

The Stahlbaums are throwing their annual Christmas Eve party. Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara and Fritz Stahlbaum’s mysterious Uncle, arrives with presents in tow. He gives Clara a Nutcracker, which Fritz breaks. Clara lovingly bandages the Nutcracker and lays him under the tree to sleep. During the night, Clara wakes up to check on her Nutcracker. As the clock strikes midnight, the Christmas tree begins to grow and mice fill the room led by the Mouse Queen. Clara’s beloved Nutcracker comes to life complete with an army, and a battle ensues. Just as the Nutcracker prince is about to be defeated, Clara throws her shoe at the Mouse Queen. The Mouse Queen is distracted and the Nutcracker defeats him. The Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince, who leads Clara through the Land of the Snowflakes in a sleigh to his kingdom.

ACT II

Clara and the Prince travel to the Land of the Sweets, ruled by the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy. The Prince tells the story of how Clara saved his life. In honor of her bravery, the royal subjects from around the world perform dances: chocolate from Spain, coffee from Arabia, tea from China, candy canes from Russia & marzipan from Denmark. Mother Ginger and her children, the Polichinelles, perform a dance followed by the Waltz of the Flowers. To conclude, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier perform a pas de deux. After the performance, Clara is led to the sleigh and flies away back home. She wakes up with her Nutcracker doll and the question remains…was it all a dream?
