Westonwood Ranch has secured $400,000 in state funding to construct a new life skills and job training center for individuals with developmental disabilities, the Freeport based nonprofit announced Monday.

  • The funding, awarded through the State of Florida Appropriations via the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, was championed by Rep. Shane Abbott and Sen. Jay Trumbull.

Westonwood Ranch will use the investment to fund and support construction of the new facility, which will serve as a hub for vocational training, independent living skills and hands-on workforce readiness programs. The building represents a major expansion of the organization’s mission to provide meaningful learning and employment opportunities for individuals with developmental differences.

The new facility is also part of a broader initiative to address a critical need in Northwest Florida — the development of affordable, supportive housing for young adults with developmental disabilities.

  • By expanding its resources, Westonwood Ranch aims to prepare more participants for success in both personal and professional environments.

“I am proud to support Westonwood Ranch and their mission to empower individuals with developmental differences through education, training, and workforce development,” Abbott said. “Investments like this not only strengthen our communities but also create pathways for independence and meaningful employment. I look forward to seeing the lasting impact this new facility will bring to District 5 and beyond.”

Lindy Wood, founder and CEO of Westonwood Ranch, expressed gratitude for the legislative support that made the funding possible.

“This funding is a game-changer for our organization and, most importantly, for the individuals and families we serve,” Wood said. “We are especially thankful for Representative Abbott and Senator Trumbull’s advocacy and belief in our mission. With this new building, we will be able to expand our training programs, foster greater independence, and create a pipeline of opportunities that help bridge the gap between education and employment.”
