Malik Humphries will spend the next three decades in prison after an Okaloosa County jury found him guilty of trafficking in fentanyl and resisting an officer without violence, according to the State Attorney’s Office.
- Circuit Judge Lacey Clark sentenced Humphries on Nov. 5 following his conviction on charges stemming from a May 2024 incident in Mary Esther. The sentence includes a mandatory $500,000 fine for the trafficking charge.
The case began on May 2, 2024, when an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office corporal was patrolling the Miracle Strip Parkway area investigating a suspected vehicle burglary, according to the State Attorney’s Office. The corporal noticed Humphries “lying back in the driver’s seat, peering out of the back driver’s side window.”
When the corporal made contact with Humphries, he spoke through the closed driver’s side window and made statements “trying to divert the Corporal’s attention,” according to the release. Based on the circumstances, Humphries was detained.
After the corporal opened the driver’s door and noticed a backpack in the front passenger seat, Humphries “fled on foot with the backpack in his hand,” according to the State Attorney’s Office. The corporal pursued him before Humphries jumped a fence and ran off, dropping the backpack where he cleared the fence.
- The corporal retrieved the backpack and found just over 66 grams of fentanyl pills inside. The pills were tested and weighed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
