The City of Niceville has appointed Alex Kukulus as its new fire chief, replacing Tommy Mayville, who is retiring after 43 years of service with the Niceville Fire Department.

Kukulus will begin his duties on Friday, July 18th. He brings 28 years of experience in the fire service, having worked through every rank in the department until his retirement in 2022 as deputy fire chief in Reno, Nevada, with Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue. He also has 25 years of experience as a paramedic.

“I am excited to begin this new endeavor and become a part of the close-knit community of Niceville,” Kukulus said.

Kukulus has been living in Navarre for the past three years with his wife Breanne and their teenage twins, Mason and Madison. He said he is eager to get involved in the community and work alongside his fellow firefighters.

The city will hold a change of command ceremony on July 11th at 11 a.m. at the municipal complex. The ceremony will provide an opportunity for community members and media to meet Kukulus and celebrate the transition in leadership.

Food and fellowship will be provided during the ceremony.
