Suspects detained in Georgia following Miramar Beach shooting, car burglaries

Multiple vehicle break-ins along Highway 98 and a shooting off Holiday Road led to suspects being apprehended across state lines after fleeing north.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office detained three suspects in Cook County, Georgia, Thursday following a string of car burglaries and a shooting in Miramar Beach, authorities said.

  • Deputies responded to a shooting around 1:15 a.m. Thursday off Holiday Road in Miramar Beach. The victim, visiting from Louisiana, was robbed and shot by someone matching the description of a car burglary suspect from incidents reported over the weekend, according to the report.

A sheriff’s sergeant and lieutenant arrived at the scene within minutes, provided aid to the victim and transported him to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s office had been investigating numerous car burglaries along Highway 98 in several neighborhoods and business plazas from the Okaloosa County line to Grand Boulevard.

  • Additional vehicle break-ins were reported early Thursday morning at a parking lot off Chat Holley and 331 S, as well as along the Highway 98 corridor west to Miramar Beach.

Crime analysts, patrol deputies and investigators identified a suspect vehicle fleeing shortly after the shooting incident and tracked it north. After a pursuit lasting several hours, the car was stopped in Cook County, Georgia, around 11:15 a.m.

Three people were detained, and Walton County Sheriff’s Office personnel have been sent to interview them. Authorities said more information will be released when available.

Anyone who believes they may be a victim of the car burglaries is asked to report it by calling (850) 892-8111.
