Woman arrested in fatal Highway 98 hit-and-run from last year in Walton County

Florida Highway Patrol arrested Heather Dickison after a year-long investigation into the crash that killed a 57-year-old jogger wearing reflective clothing on her daily run.

Authorities have arrested a Bay County woman in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed a Santa Rosa Beach jogger on Highway 98 last year.

  • Heather Dickison was taken into custody on March 28, 2025, more than a year after the March 6, 2024, incident that claimed the life of a 57-year-old female jogger, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP officials said Dickison was driving a 2018 Ram 1500 westbound on U.S. Highway 98 near Mussett Bayou Road when the vehicle drifted out of the westbound lane, crossed the fog line and struck the jogger who was running on the north paved apron of the highway. The crash occurred at approximately 6:18 a.m.

The jogger, who was wearing reflective running clothing during what officials described as her daily morning run, was pronounced dead at the scene. After the collision, the truck reportedly fled the area.

Through an investigation conducted by the Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Division, the Ram was identified as the vehicle involved and Dickison as the alleged driver. The truck was later located in Panama City.

An arrest warrant was obtained through Walton County, but authorities said Dickison failed to turn herself in. She was eventually apprehended during a traffic stop on March 28 and is awaiting extradition to Walton County.

  • Dickison has been charged with Leaving the Scene Involving Death.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to the scene last year before the Florida Highway Patrol took over the investigation.
