Eglin Air Force Base has implemented new recreation permit requirements and hunting regulation changes that include mandatory background checks and updated access procedures for the military reservation.
- The changes, which took effect on Sept. 16, introduce background check requirements for anyone 16 years or older seeking new or renewed recreation permits. The 96th Security Forces Squadron will review potential criminal history and offense types for each application, with processing taking up to 72 hours.
“These updates reflect our ongoing commitment to responsible stewardship of Eglin’s natural resources while providing recreational opportunities,” said Justin Johnson, 96th Civil Engineer Group Natural Resources chief. “Access to the reservation is a privilege, not a right — it’s important to enjoy it safely and responsibly.”
All applicants must have an iSportsman account to complete the background check process. New customers can register for accounts on the website.
The base has also implemented mandatory check-in and check-out procedures for Coastal Restriction Areas. The requirement begins Sept. 27 for dove fields and Oct. 1 for camping areas, with check-ins conducted through the iSportsman website to maintain personnel accountability.
Deer-dog hunting permits will transition to a lottery-based system for the 2025-26 season, affecting hunters 16 years or older who want to hunt in designated dog hunt areas during the general gun season. The $50 permits allow access to dog hunting areas from Nov. 1 to Feb. 8, 2026.
- Applications for the deer-dog hunting lottery are being accepted from Sept. 15-30, with results posted on the iSportsman website by Oct. 8.
Hunting within open portions of the Eglin Reservation will be permitted on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays during the general gun season across all management units, according to base officials.
Complete details on the new regulations, times, dates and processes are available on the iSportsman website.
