A beachgoer discovered nearly half a million dollars worth of cocaine that washed ashore on a Walton County beach Sunday morning, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.
- The 25 bricks were marked with Yosemite Sam and have been confiscated and logged into evidence, the sheriff’s office said in a statement released today.
“While enjoying our beautiful beaches, if you come across any square groupers, PLEASE call us immediately and DO NOT touch suspicious packages,” the sheriff’s office stated. “The contents could be extremely harmful.”
The discovery comes just days after a similar incident in nearby Baldwin County, where 50 individually wrapped kilos of cocaine weighing approximately 110 pounds washed ashore on the Fort Morgan Peninsula on June 26.
- The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office was contacted about the possible drug bundle and verified its contents before transporting it to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Command for analysis. The Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations was contacted and will continue with that investigation.
Baldwin County Sheriff Lowery said it is not uncommon for additional bundles of illicit contraband to surface and asked the community to report any bundles immediately to local law enforcement.
“We ask the public not to open bundles or packages, as they could contain hazardous chemicals or dangerous drugs,” the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office stated in its press release.
Both sheriff’s offices emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious packages found on beaches rather than handling them directly due to potential safety hazards.
