Sunsets along the Emerald Coast never get old and there are plenty of places to soak in the stunning sky.

  • Whether you prefer a quiet stretch of sand, the harbor lined with boats, or a rooftop with a cocktail in hand, Jamie Kamber, editor of Destin Snapshots and local photographer, is sharing her favorite sunset spots in Destin and Fort Walton Beach.

The Rooftop at Henderson Beach Resort

For an elevated sunset experience, The Rooftop at Henderson Beach Resort gives you a completely different perspective. The stylish space faces west and overlooks the greenery and shoreline of Henderson Beach State Park. The added height and sophisticated vibes set it apart from a typical beach sunset. Pair the view with craft cocktails and sushi, and it quickly turns into a fun evening out. On Wednesdays you can enjoy their new Rhythm & Rolls event, which features live music plus special pricing on drinks and sushi from 5pm to 9pm.

Henderson Beach State Park

If you prefer your sunset with sand between your toes, Henderson Beach State Park is one of the most scenic places to catch golden hour. The wide-open beaches and rolling white sand dunes create an expansive, peaceful backdrop. It’s common to see photographers capturing family sessions in the warm evening light, especially during the spring and summer. Covered pavilions throughout the park also make it a great spot to settle in and enjoy a picnic as you wait for the sun to set.

Norriego Point

At Norriego Point, you get a front-row look at East Pass, Destin Harbor, and the bay as the sun slips below the horizon. The area was recently updated and features a boardwalk that wraps around the point and crosses over the dunes, making it more accessible and perfect for a scenic evening stroll. You can take a dip in the water, let the kids play in the sand, or watch for dolphins swimming through the pass. It’s a relaxed, laid-back setting that is picturesque and distinctly Destin.

Destin Harbor

Sunsets along Destin Harbor come with even more energy. Whether you’re dining at a waterfront restaurant, strolling through HarborWalk Village, or heading out on a boat, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the changing sky. Docked boats reflect the sunset colors, music drifts through the air, and the harbor takes on a golden glow. It’s an easy way to combine dinner, entertainment, and sunset all in one place. A few local favorites include Boshamps, Harbor Docks and Marina Cafe

Captain Leonard Destin Park

Overlooking Crab Island and the Choctawhatchee Bay, Captain Leonard Destin Park is especially popular with families. The park features a small beach area, boardwalk, a pier, splash pad, playground, and picnic pavilions making it an easy place to spend the entire evening. After sunset, you can walk down the street for dinner at Dewey Destin’s Seafood and finish the night with dessert from Pink Coyote or Dewey’s Snoballs.

Okaloosa Island Pier

Stretching more than 1,000 feet into the Gulf, The Island Pier delivers sweeping, unobstructed sunset views. It’s common to spot dolphins, sea turtles, herons, and other sea creatures while you wait for the sky to change colors. The pier is also a popular fishing spot, so you can watch anglers reel in their catch or cast a line yourself! An observer or walking pass is $2, and children 5 and under are free.

Beasley Park

Located on Okaloosa Island, Beasley Park is a popular public beach that is perfect for a relaxed evening by the Gulf. With easy beach access and expansive shoreline views, it’s a simple, no-frills place to watch the sun go down. It’s especially appealing if you’re looking for a quieter atmosphere without bustling restaurants or harbor crowds.

Sunset Cruise

For a completely different perspective, consider watching the sunset from the water. Whether it’s a dolphin cruise, a private charter, or a rented pontoon boat, being out on the bay or Gulf gives you panoramic views you simply can’t get from shore. The reflection of the sky on the water, boats cruising by, and the chance of spotting dolphins make it a memorable way to end the day.

Tips for Catching the Best Sunset on the Emerald Coast

  • Sunset times shift significantly throughout the year, with later sunsets in summer and earlier ones in winter.
  • The location of the sunset changes seasonally, too. In summer, the sun sets further south over the Gulf, while in winter it sinks behind land or the bay.
  • A little cloud cover often leads to more colorful skies, while clear evenings offer calmer, golden light.
  • Parking can fill up quickly at popular spots during peak season, so plan to arrive early when possible.

A Simple Way to End the Day

Whether you’re watching from a rooftop, a pier, a quiet stretch of sand, or out on the water, sunset is one of the highlights of living and vacationing along the Emerald Coast. It’s a daily reminder that sometimes the best plans are simply finding a relaxing spot and slowing down long enough to watch the sky change colors.
