The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after an inmate was found unresponsive in his cell early Sunday morning at the Walton County Jail, according to a WCSO press release.

  • Jessie Raby was being held in confinement for Holmes County after he was arrested and charged with the murder of his mother and his brother in 2024, WCSO officials said.

According to the sheriff’s office, security checks were performed every 30 minutes while Raby was in confinement. The last security check before Raby was found unresponsive was at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, when he was reportedly observed acting normally.

WCSO reported that when breakfast was served 15 minutes later, Raby was observed on the floor on his back.

Safety protocols were followed and a team entered the cell, according to the press release. It was determined Raby needed medical care and a nurse stepped in and provided care. The sheriff’s office stated the nurse found foreign objects blocking Raby’s airway and removed what appeared to be a cloth, a sock, and pieces of toilet paper.

  • CPR was started and when EMS arrived they took over the care of Raby, the release said. EMS pronounced his death at 6:37 a.m.

The sheriff’s office reported that the whole incident was captured on security cameras.

According to WCSO, the District 1 Medical Examiner was contacted and responded. Raby’s family was notified.

The case is pending autopsy, but at this time his death appears to be a result of his own actions, according to the sheriff’s office.

  1. I call BULLSHIT…. I’ve been in Walton County Jail after being falsely charged and I am a 61 year old grandmother/ minister with no criminal history and known heart issues AND my blood pressure was 225/110 which is dangerous for a healthy heart but it’s a death risk but someone like me with an enlarged heart, NEVER ONCE DID THEY GET A DOCTOR OR TAKE ME TO HOSPITAL. If WCSO wants you to DIE…they stick you in confinement WHERE THERE ARE NO WITNESSES AND A “Camera that is always on you in the cell mysteriously malfunctions” LETS SEE THE CAMERA VIDEO OF HIM DOING THIS TO HIMSELF
