Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel was sworn in as an honorary officer of the Fort Walton Beach Police Department on Wednesday during a ceremony at a Florida Sheriffs Association event.

  • DJ, who was diagnosed with brain and spinal cancer in 2018, has always dreamed of becoming a law enforcement officer. He has undergone more than 13 brain surgeries and is participating in a research study that has given his family hope.

Fort Walton Beach Police Chief Robert Bage, representing the Florida Police Chiefs Association, administered the oath to DJ during the Tallahassee event.

“DJ’s mission to be sworn in by over 1,000 agencies across the country is nothing short of inspiring—and his strength, courage, and unwavering spirit remind us all why we serve,” Bage said.

Since his diagnosis, DJ and his father have visited more than 900 law enforcement agencies, nearly all of which have named him an honorary officer.

During the ceremony, DJ asked if he could have Chief Bage’s long sleeve shirt, which the chief readily gave to him.

  • “He wears the badge and uniform with more heart than most could ever imagine,” Bage said. “Thank you, DJ, for reminding us what true service and heart looks like. We stand with you.”
