The Okaloosa County School District kicked off Mental Health Awareness Month with a comprehensive initiative focused on resilience and community wellness under the theme “Turn Awareness into Action.”

  • The district-wide program, announced Wednesday, will engage students, staff and families in activities designed to foster mental wellness, promote conversation and provide mental health resources throughout May.

“We are committed to the mental health of every student and staff member in our district,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “Our Mental Health Team plays a vital role in ensuring that our school communities have the support they need to thrive. Mental health is not just the absence of illness — it’s about resilience and well-being.”

School officials noted the initiative includes various activities ranging from fun events to structured dialogues about mental wellness, all aimed at raising awareness and improving mental health across the Okaloosa community.

According to district data, mental health remains a significant concern, with one in five people experiencing a mental health condition each year. The district emphasized that mental health extends beyond individual concerns and represents a community issue requiring collective action.

  • As part of this year’s effort, OCSD is encouraging individuals to take intentional steps toward prioritizing mental health through simple, achievable actions. The district recommends a three-step approach: assessing mental health status, choosing specific actions for improvement, and nurturing emotional well-being.

To support these efforts, OCSD maintains a comprehensive mental health resource page for students, parents and staff. The online portal includes tools, community resources and guidance on seeking professional support.

Chambers encouraged community members to actively participate in the month’s activities, stating, “As we move through Mental Health Month, I encourage everyone to reflect on their mental health, engage in open conversations, and take steps toward better mental wellness.”

The district’s approach includes addressing mental health stigma by providing accessible resources, supporting educators, and encouraging open dialogue among students and families.
