Two teens killed in Highway 98 crash in Walton County

A collision between an SUV and a tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 98 in Walton County Monday night left two teenagers dead and two others in critical condition.

Two teenagers were killed and two others critically injured when their SUV collided with a tractor-trailer Monday night on U.S. Highway 98 in Walton County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

  • The crash occurred around 9:28 p.m. approximately one mile west of South Watersound Parkway, FHP reported.

According to investigators, an SUV carrying four 18-year-old passengers was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 98 when it collided with a trailer being hauled by a tractor-trailer that was performing a U-turn in the paved median.

Following impact, the SUV crossed the median and both eastbound lanes before coming to rest in the wood line on the south side of the highway.

  • Two of the SUV occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. The other two occupants sustained critical injuries and were transported to Bay Medical Center.

The driver of the tractor-trailer and a passenger were not injured in the crash.

As of 5 a.m., Highway 98 is back open, according to the Walton County  Sheriff’s Office.
